Get Your Church Involved Frequently Asked Questions
- Why are you doing This is My Body, L.A.?
We believe that the time is right for the followers of Jesus Christ in Los Angeles to step across lines of ethnicity, economics, and denominations, to befriend each other, to link arms, and to engage our city with constructive service and witness to Jesus Christ.
We do not believe that this is our idea. It is his. And we refer to it with his words: This is My Body, LA. We do not want this to be a Bel Air Presbyterian Church program, but we eagerly want to participate and to do whatever we may to facilitate it.
- What do you hope to achieve through This is My Body, L.A.?
Our goal is to step across lines of division in the body of Christ to: (1) make friends in other churches, (2) engage L.A. together in grass-roots mission, and (3) strengthen missional community within our churches.
- How might our church take part in this?
We will be using this website in early February through which groups of roughly 5-12 believers may find another group from another L.A. church. Group leaders will make contact with each other and make arrangements to bring their groups together one to four times sometime between Easter (March 23, 2008) and the end of May. The groups themselves may be existing small groups or groups formed just for the purpose of these spring field trips. Groups that meet their partner group more than once will enhance their learning, serving, and relational experience.
Group leaders will plan and facilitate these gatherings themselves, but some will want a little guidance. We have been working with Bishop Kenneth Ulmer, Senior Pastor of Faithful Central Bible Church, and Dr. Michael Lee, Senior Pastor of Young Nak English Ministry, to prepare basic printed and video resources that would guide these group pairs as they meet for up to two Bible study sessions and two outreach events.
Group pairs will agree on an outreach activity (or two) by identifying a need in their neighborhood or through a mission project supported by one of their two churches. We hope that many of these group pairs will serve together on May 3-4 in conjunction with Big Sunday .
-
How many groups do we have to commit to this project in order to participate?
It is our hope that churches throughout Los Angeles can participate. So if your church would like to have one group or one thousand groups take part, we'd love to share this experience with you.
-
I hear you have a study guide to prepare for the pre-Easter Season. How can my church use those?
To prepare our congregation for this experience at Bel Air Presbyterian Church, we have written a six-week, small-group curriculum in the Gospel of Luke (including videos with Mark Brewer, Bishop Ulmer of Faithful Central Bible Church, and Dr. Michael Lee of Young Nak English Ministry). If you think that this curriculum would also be useful to you in any way, we would be happy to make it available to you at cost.

My church is already participating in Big Sunday. How would This is My Body, L.A. add to that experience?
This is My Body, L.A. has intentionally integrated Big Sunday into the experience. During the Easter season, groups will be encouraged to pair with a group from another congregation in order to have a few interactions based around an optional short study that we have created and through service in the community. We hope that many of these group pairs will serve together on May 3-4 in conjunction with Big Sunday .
