Get Your Church Involved Frequently Asked Questions
If your church would like to participate, or if you'd like to get more information, please contact us at info@thisismybodyla.com.
We believe that the time is right for the followers of Jesus Christ in Los Angeles to step across lines of ethnicity, economics, and denominations, to befriend each other, to link arms, and to engage our city with constructive service and witness to Jesus Christ.
We do not believe that this is our idea. It is his. And we refer to it with his words: This is My Body, LA. We do not want this to be a Bel Air Presbyterian Church program, but we eagerly want to participate and to do whatever we may to facilitate it.
Our goal is to step across lines of division in the body of Christ to:
- make friends in other churches,
- engage L.A. together in grass-roots mission, and
- strengthen missional community within our churches.
To do this we will set up a website (www.thisismybodyla.com) in early February through which groups of roughly 5-12 believers may find another group from another L.A. church. Group leaders will make contact with each other and make arrangements to bring their groups together one to four times sometime between Easter (March 23, 2008) and the end of May. The groups themselves may be existing small groups or groups formed just for the purpose of these spring field trips. Groups that meet their partner group more than once will enhance their learning, serving, and relational experience.
Group leaders will plan and facilitate these gatherings themselves, but some will want a little guidance. We have been working with Bishop Kenneth Ulmer, Senior Pastor of Faithful Central Bible Church, and Dr. Michael Lee, Senior Pastor of Young Nak English Ministry, to prepare basic printed and video resources that would guide these group pairs as they meet for up to two Bible study sessions and two outreach events.
Group pairs will agree on an outreach activity (or two) by identifying a need in their neighborhood or through a mission project supported by one of their two churches. We hope that many of these group pairs will serve together on May 3-4 in conjunction with Big Sunday (www.bigsunday.org).
I realize you may have many questions. In the coming weeks we will be posting more information at www.thisismybodyla.com and are more than happy to interact by phone or email. Please be in touch.
One final note: To prepare our congregation for this experience at Bel Air Presbyterian Church we have written a six-week, small-group curriculum in the Gospel of Luke (including videos with Mark Brewer, Bishop Ulmer, and Dr. Lee). If you think that this curriculum would also be useful to you in any way, we would be happy to make it available to you at cost (go to our resources page for more information).
May the peace of Christ bring renewal and refreshment to you this season.
